The 12 Astrological Houses: The Map of Your Life

If the planets in astrology are the actors and the signs are the styles in which they perform, the houses are the stages where the play unfolds. The 12 astrological houses divide the birth chart into sectors that represent specific areas of human experience: from personal identity to the mysteries of transformation, by way of love, work and relationships.

Getting to know the houses in your birth chart is reading the map of the settings where your life unfolds.

How the houses are calculated

The houses are calculated from the exact place and time of birth. The Ascendant — the degree of the zodiac that was rising over the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth — determines the cusp of the 1st House and sets the orientation of the entire house system.

That’s why two people born on the same day but at a different time or place can have very different birth charts.

The 12 houses and their meanings

1st House — Identity: The body, appearance, the way we present ourselves to the world. The “I” in its most primal and instinctive form.

2nd House — Resources: Personal values, money, material possessions and our relationship with self-esteem. What do I consider mine? What do I value?

3rd House — The everyday mind: Communication, siblings, short trips, basic learning and our immediate surroundings.

4th House — Home and roots: Our family of origin, childhood, the place we feel is “home.” The psychological roots that sustain us.

5th House — Creativity and pleasure: Self-expression, children, play, romance, the arts and hobbies.

6th House — Daily work and health: Routines, service, physical habits and our relationship with the body as the soul’s instrument.

7th House — Relationships: Partnership, associations, agreements and the “significant others” who mirror us.

8th House — Transformation: Sexuality, taboos, inheritance, death and rebirth, shared resources and depth psychology.

9th House — Expansion: Long journeys, philosophy, spirituality, higher education, beliefs and the search for meaning.

10th House — Vocation and reputation: Career, our place in society, the authority figure and our public legacy.

11th House — Community: Friends, groups, collective ideals, long-term projects and our vision of the future.

12th House — The hidden: The unconscious, retreats, what lies out of sight, anonymous service, limitations and our connection with the transcendent.

Angular, succedent and cadent houses

The houses are grouped into three categories according to their quality:

  • Angular (1, 4, 7, 10): These are the most powerful. Planets here express themselves strongly in the outer world.
  • Succedent (2, 5, 8, 11): They stabilize and consolidate what was begun in the angular houses.
  • Cadent (3, 6, 9, 12): They are more mental and reflective; they prepare us for the next angular cycle.

Your personal map

Whenever a planet occupies a house in your birth chart, it “activates” that area of your life with its particular energy. A Sun in the 10th House speaks of an identity that finds fulfillment in public life and vocation. A Moon in the 4th House points to a deep emotional connection with home and family.

The birth chart doesn’t determine your destiny — it shows you the territory. How you navigate it is always your choice.
